Have you ever got a close-up look into the eyes of a riot policeman? Well, I don’t recommend it, for it probably means you’re either getting arrested, batton-whipped or man-handled in some other unsavoury fashion. Either that, or you’re married to one, which some might say is an altogether worse fate.
Here in Barcelona, riot policemen – known locally as mossos d’esquadra (although they’ve attracted other somewhat less official names in recent years) – have become ubiquitous features of the city landscape, ready at the drop of a helmet to hit the streets, and every so often the people on them – all for good reason of course. As you can see from the following footage, they’re just doing their bit to keep people safe from harm’s way, while having a little fun along the way.
In Madrid, meanwhile, things have been seriously hotting up, and the city’s fierceless men in padded blue are finally getting their taste of the action. As you’ll see in the video below, the calm and restraint with which they go about their duties is a wonder to behold, leaving one to wonder: What would we do without the boys in blue?
